| United
Provider Services Prescription
Drug Card
When
you use your UPS card you will still pay the pharmacy
for your prescription, however, it will be priced
at the lower of the usual and customary price for
the pharmacy or the UPS discounted pricing formula.
The UPS pricing formula is usually significantly
lower than the regular retail price of the pharmacy.
In any event, you will receive the best price available
for your prescription through the pharmacy.
All
that is required to use your UPS card is to present
it to your pharmacist at the time you are having
a prescription filled. It is important to present
your UPS card BEFORE the pharmacist begins filling
your prescription. The pharmacist will use the card
to submit the prescription electronically to the
UPS on-line adjudication system. In addition to
the price savings you will gain from using your
UPS card, the system will also perform a concurrent
drug utilization review whereby we will transmit
information back to your pharmacist should the system
detect drug-drug interactions and/or duplicate therapy
that could be dangerous.
Covered
Drugs
Most medications requiring a prescription by federal
law are covered. Over-the-counter medications and
other nonprescription items are not covered.
Generic
Medications
Generic Medications are medications that the Food
and Drug Administration has deemed to be equivalent
to the branded medication. They must pass the same
stringent tests that the branded medication did
in order to be considered a brand equivalent. Generic
medications will save you money. They average around
50% less than their branded counterparts. This UPS
card leaves the decision to purchase branded or
generic medications to you, your physician and your
pharmacist.
How
to Use the United Provider Services Program
Here
is the easy, step-by-step process for using the
UPS program:
1. Locate one of the participating network pharmacies
in your area.
2.
Take both your prescription and your UPS identification
card to your participating pharmacy. Be sure to
present these items to the pharmacist before he
or she begins filling the prescription.
3.
UPS will calculate the preferred price for your
medications and electronically relay this information
to the pharmacy. Pay the total cost of your prescriptions
as indicated by the pharmacist at the time of purchase.
The
UPS prescription program is an on-line computer
system. To receive your preferred pricing, the pharmacist
must see your drug card and enter your 9-digit ID
number. Price quotes cannot be given over the phone. |
